Need help with the name of an "antique?" doll...?
Q. I have old "dolls". I will do my best to explain what they look like and maybe someone can help me out. I need to know what they are called and what they are worth. My parents keep calling them carnival dolls and coopie (not sure how to spell that) dolls, but when I google those words I can not find what I am looking for. They are not dolls you would play with. They were more of a collectible or decoration. They stand up, and they always have very prety dresses on. This is the hard part to explain. The face was made out of string, and the eyes were painted on. I hope someone knows what I am taking about.. The head was plastic or something with threads of string covering it to make it look like the color of the face. I believe the… [cont.]

What role has/does a "doll" play in the history of various culture's? Is there still a place for dolls today?
Q. Dolls, or figures that represent humans, have been found all over the world, in many cultures. I want to know how they've been used in ritual, for teaching, as art, etc. Any info will be apprectiated...I know why the "doll" speaks to me but searches offer little in the way of real information regarding dolls and their roots, so to speak, and how they were used.

A. Akua'ba dolls were carried by the pregnant Akan (Ghana) women. It was believed that pregnant women should only look at beautiful things; or their child will not be beautiful. So, they carried these dolls that were carved in the ideal image of beauty. Ndebele (South Africa) men used to put a doll on the doorstep of a woman he wished to court. Betrothed Ndebele women were given dolls and named their first child after the doll. It was common practice throughout Africa for dolls to be "cared for" by young brides until they gave birth to their first child. Tne Yombe or Ba Kongo (Zaire) made nkishi nkondi to protect the village from evil spirits and others that would harm it. Many were more like sculptures and larger than dolls. Also,… [cont.]

How many parents out there are actually purchasing the "bratz dolls" for the under 8 set?
Q. I recently attended a TWO year olds birthday party that was themed around the bratz dolls. This child recieved at least 2 dozen pieces of bratz merchandise and to be honest I thought they were bit sexual for a such a young child. My daughters birthday rolled around and the same couple who threw the bratz party bought my 2 year old a bratz sheet set for her "big girl bed" . The images on the sheets were girls with full blown floozy make up on and teeny tiny hot pants pjs...I disturbs me and I am hoping that these dolls are generaly aimed at older childern (say like 13?) I am just curious as to the trends others have seen and if in fact it is normal for such young children to play with toys like this...thanks! Okay okay I suppose I… [cont.]

A. Thank god, I am not alone. I am only 24 and I do not have any children, but I used to work at a wal mart. It was amazing to see how fast they sold and who they were selling to. I find them disturbing. What kind of a message are people sending to their children? On more then one occasion I had parents, with their children with them (as young as about 3 or 4) picking out the one they don't already have and then turning and commenting to me about how cute these dolls were!!! Cute? A far cry from cute if you ask me. What happened to Cabbage Patch Dolls, and Strawberry Short Cake? Now that is CUTE! I can tell you if I had any children, that would be the last thing in the world I would be letting them play with. Even if they are meant to be… [cont.]

where can I find a monologue that is similar to the character of Sky Masterson in "Guys and Dolls"?
Q. My son is trying out for his high school musical. They are doing "Guys and Dolls". He needs a monologue from 2-3 minutes long that would portray the character of Sky Masterson. But he can't use one of Sky's monologues. How do I know where to look and what to look for?

A. You can try this site: I would look for something blunt and snappy. It can be comic -- but a dry humor. Sky is a very confident, cool fellow with surprisingly firm principles. He is respected and bows to no one -- except perhaps Sarah.

A. This is referred to as an all Bisque or sugar candy doll. Many of these dolls were made in Japan and if you look on the back you should see the country of manufacture. These dolls have been produced since the 1800's but German and Japan were most popular in the 1920's and because of the world Wars they lost out in Germany and they were produced in japan. The ones from Japan were not fired with the color and it will wash off, so you have to be very careful. The French one produced over time are the most expensive and sell for thousand of dollars. Referred to as French Pupee de Poche - Mignonette or small pocket doll. I personally have a collection of these dolls but I do not have the money for a french one. Some are even used in doll houses. What type of woman "dolls" herself up to submit to the will of a man...is this intentional?
Q. I saw this girl go on a date with this guy and she's been out with alot of men. This guy is rich and has a nice car and when she got ready to go on the date with the guy, instead of having confidence she "dolled" herself up to make herself look vulnerable and submissive. What type of women do this?
Asked by MrRyan - Wed Jun 30 11:29:11 2010 - Singles & Dating - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Not sure how you doll yourself up to look vulnerable and submissive, in particular. Most women wear makeup and nice clothes because it makes them feel good. A lot of women who like feeling submissive and are turned on by power do like older, more prestigious men. From experience, most gals I know who are into this are the "princess" types who like being spoiled, feel comfortable being slightly dependant and perhaps are plagued by indecisiveness. A guy who knows what he wants, is willing to shower her with attention and affection, and has a slightly dominant side is a good match. If she isn't confident enough to set good boundaries, she can be taken advantage of or get into an abusive relationship, however. But not all powerful… [cont.]

What is the big deal about "ugly dolls"?
Q. Do you like the Ugly Dolls? I grew up with cute stuffed animals which look like it takes some work to make. I saw these "ugly dolls" and could not make a connection with them. By the way, they look like anyone can make them. So what is the big deal about "ugly dolls"? When, I see them, I don't feel altruistic.

A. I think that they are adorable! I have 3 Ugly Dolls and are going to get some more. My favorite one is 'Ice-Bat'. they are for everyone, like for little girls to older boys. so instead of brats and action figures they can be sorta both. i hope my answer helps. What happened to the winner of "Pussycat dolls present..the search for the next doll", Asia Nitollano
Q. I watched the show and Asia Nitollano was announced the winner. However, I do not see her in the group as the lead singer as the show suggested she would be. Did she quit, thus never appearing with them at the "Live Earth" show. Did Asia Nitollano get fired because Nicole Scherzinger returned full-time due to her "poor" solo project debut. Is Nicole a solo artist or has she rejoined/never left the Pussycat dolls (PCD) . Is Asia a solo artist, now and does she have a record contact??? Thanks in advance for your informative input, fans Why does Asia not have a record contract with A&M, Griffin Records ?

Who should I audition for in "Guys and Dolls"?
Q. My school is putting on a production of Guys and Dolls this year. I am unsure who I would like to audition for. I typically do best when I get a part for a character who is normally very nervous, awkward, or unsure most of the time. (Ex. Barnaby in Helly, Dolly and Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast) Based on this, who would be the best guy in "Guys and Dolls" to audition for?
