What role has/does a "doll" play in the history of various culture's? Is there still a place for dolls today?
Q. Dolls, or figures that represent humans, have been found all over the world, in many cultures. I want to know how they've been used in ritual, for teaching, as art, etc. Any info will be apprectiated...I know why the "doll" speaks to me but searches offer little in the way of real information regarding dolls and their roots, so to speak, and how they were used.

A. Akua'ba dolls were carried by the pregnant Akan (Ghana) women. It was believed that pregnant women should only look at beautiful things; or their child will not be beautiful. So, they carried these dolls that were carved in the ideal image of beauty. Ndebele (South Africa) men used to put a doll on the doorstep of a woman he wished to court. Betrothed Ndebele women were given dolls and named their first child after the doll. It was common practice throughout Africa for dolls to be "cared for" by young brides until they gave birth to their first child. I bought my cousin a barbie doll from Toys R Us and I am outraged at these "Bratz" dolls?
Q. What happend to Barbie? When was she replaced by 'Bratz" which takes Barbie and cakes on make up and make the eyes huge and they are dressed up like hookers. Is this what our world is coming to when a 4 year old plays with dolls in fishnet stockings?

I have an antique procelean doll, 2" tall, blond, painted hair and face, stands on her 2 flat feet, value?
Q. Anyone familiar with this antique doll. My mother owned it for over 50 years. Jointed shoulders, legs not jointed, 2" tiny.

A. This is referred to as an all Bisque or sugar candy doll. Many of these dolls were made in Japan and if you look on the back you should see the country of manufacture. These dolls have been produced since the 1800's but German and Japan were most popular in the 1920's and because of the world Wars they lost out in Germany and they were produced in japan. The ones from Japan were not fired with the color and it will wash off, so you have to be very careful. The French one produced over time are the most expensive and sell for thousand of dollars. Referred to as French Pupee de Poche - Mignonette or small pocket doll. I personally have a collection of these dolls but I do not have the money for a french one. Some are even used in doll houses. How does one remove non-water soluble glue from the face of an antique bisque doll?
Q. I bought an antique Armand Marseille doll on ebay awhile back. Although it was not listed in the description and could not be seen from the pics, someone had tried to reset the dolls eyes and teeth with non-water soluble glue. I was able to loosen the glue enough to remove the eyes and teeth so that I could properly reset them, but there is glue on her face that won't come off with soap and warm water. This glue is like Crazy Glue or Super Glue. Does anyone know how to remove it without damaging the bisque?

Q. Hello I have a small porcelin/china/clay doll given to me from a relative. I think it is an antique. It is small and white and looks very old It has the word FOREIGN engraved onto the back. Can anyone help me identify it? Thanks

A. I think that your doll IS old. Your best bet would be to find a local doll dealer or doll club and ask their opinion on how you could identify your doll. Try the United Federation of Doll Clubs web site to see if there is a club in your area, or an appraiser that could look at some photos you send, for a reasonable fee. Here is a link to a web site that features a bisque doll that is marked foreign on the back. When I copied the link, the doll was at the bottom of the page. I did a quick net search and there are others with dolls marked foreign who would also like to know about them. Q. For those who know about Dollfie dolls, could you please help me out??? You see, I was under the impression that there were a gazillion different Dollfies out there, but on their website> there doesn't seem to be that many. Q. I watched the show and Asia Nitollano was announced the winner. However, I do not see her in the group as the lead singer as the show suggested she would be.
